HUMANITARIAN AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES
In the years 2002-2003, cooperated in the restructuring
of the Thae Maskan and Allahuddin orphanage kitchens in Kabul (Afghanistan).
Over the months of May and June 2003 during the allied
military intervention in Iraq, participated in a mission to Bagdad to
restore the children's hospital at Al Mansur, with the financial aids of two
major Italian newspapers "Unità" and "Il Giornale".
September-October 2003, brought medical equipment and
drugs to Kabul for ISAF and Ali Abad Hospital. Personally treated various
children suffering from Leischmaniosis (endemic form of parasitosis among
Afghan children); started a campaign against illegal children- and
organ-trading in that country and cooperated with some GVC projects, such as
primary schooling for girls.
From 2004 on, travelled to Afghanistan to start the
reconstruction of the crumbling orphanage at Parwan, some 80 km north of
Kabul, which eventually was completed over the months of March to June 2004
thanks to SPES funds and the cooperation of the Red Cross.
Over January-February 2005, right after the Tsunami
disaster, was appointed by SPES and by the International Institute for Human
Rights to organize a monitoring station in Srilanka for the control and
allocation of the financial aids in favour of those populations, to monitor
and report any child abuse in the country, and to assess some aid projects
in favour of the people of Srilanka.
Upon returning to Italy, submitted a full report to the
Italian Foreign Ministry, La Farnesina, against the severe violations of
children's rights on the part of both the central government and of the LTTE
guerrilla fighters, personally met. In particular against the recruitment of
child-soldiers, sexual abuse and limited freedom of those sexually abused or
homeless children who are then imprisoned in crumbling jails.
From March 2005 on, cooperated with the program
"Avamposto 55" for the establishment of Barbara Contini's hospital in
Darfur.
In September 2005 was again in Srilanka to complete the
previously arranged projects: Schools built by SPES in the province of
Batticaloa, the handing over of some boats donated by the province of Udine
to the fishermen of that same region.
During that mission, which had been agreed upon and
coordinated by the Italian Foreign Ministry and the Friuli Venezia Giulia
regional government, successfully set free those children unjustly
imprisoned in Colombo also thanks to the authorization of the local
government for the transferring of the children to the Don Bosco compound
and for the allotment of an area where to build a home without bars for the
recuperation of the same children.
In November 2005 organized the transport and installation
of a camp operating theatre in the Kashmir (Pakistan) for the medical
emergencies subsequent to the recent devastating earthquake.
